What is epilepsy?

Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition. According to epidemiology survey of India, there are estimated 1 Crore epilepsy patients of which 40 lakh patients continue to have seizures in spite of prolonged use of antiepileptic medicines

Epilepsy is a physical condition of the brain, characterised by recurrent epileptic seizures. Seizures result from uncontrolled and abnormal electrical activity in the brain, which may have a variety of different causes.
An epileptic seizure should be viewed as a symptom of an underlying cause rather than a disease in itself.

With optimum care, the majority of individuals (about 7 out of 10) with active epilepsies can satisfactorily control recurrent seizures with antiepileptic drugs or other treatment, such as surgery, and will lead full and active lives.

For some individuals, epilepsy is much more than simply ‘having seizures’. It may result in significant disability or early death, social exclusion and stigmatisation. Those with the condition commonly encounter problems in the following areas: education; employment; driving; development; psychiatric and psychological health; full social integration; and personal relationships.
